Diagonal Diary: Whiskey with Guenther, heroics from Hunt, and a man in a tuxedo

Mon 1 July: After unpacking the weekend’s sporting drama – antics from Max and Lando, and acrobatics from Jude – attention turns to our client the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). With a five-week break between the previous round at Oulton Park and the next round at Croft (27-28 July), this is the ideal opportunity to look back at the season so far and produce a coverage report looking at mainstream, digital, and social media. The racing may not resume until the end of the month, but the BTCC action keeps coming.

Next up is the Goodwood Festival of Speed (11-14 July) where there will be appearances from the Championship’s teams and drivers. More on that next week…

Tue 2 July: First meeting of the day is with Asetek SimSports. The Danish manufacturer of sim-racing hardware will be at Gamescom – the annual trade fair for the computer and video games industry – in Germany at the end of August and plans are well underway.

That is followed by a meeting with Pat Heuzenroeder – the 18-year-old Australian racing driver competing in this season’s GB3 Championship – to discuss the content plan for his next event at Circuit Zandvoort, Netherlands, the weekend after next (13-14 July).

A new Motor Sport column by Diagonal MD Matt Bishop is published. This week, the Bish remembers the 1978 Formula 1 French Grand Prix and James Hunt’s last ever F1 podium finish.

After a series of one-to-one interviews (including a live slot for Sky Sports News conducted by a tuxedo-wearing Craig Slater who has hot-footed it here from a boat on the River Thames!), the conversation and cocktails flow, and Guenther brings proceedings to a close by raising a toast to being ‘perfectly untamed’, just like his favourite whiskey.

Wed 3 July: Last week we told you about a very special event with a modern-day Formula 1 icon that we would be hosting in the build-up to this weekend’s F1 British Grand Prix. Well, tonight’s the night! Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner is unveiled as a brand ambassador for Buffalo Trace Bourbon at their recently-opened London Distillery in Covent Garden. Our photographers and videographers are on-site to capture the event, the highlight of which is a media Q&A with Guenther led by Diagonal MD Matt Bishop.

Thu 4 July: The day after the night before and, while our Buffalo Trace event with Guenther Steiner was a great success, the post-event work is just as important. Much of the day is spent following up with journalists – both those who attended the event and those who didn’t – to ensure that they have everything they need (images, footage, quotes, press release etc.) to produce their pieces. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for them over the coming days and weeks…

A new episode in our series of ‘Up to Speed’ video interviews is published on Diagonal’s YouTube channel. The Bish sits down with Asetek SimSports CEO and Founder, André Eriksen, who shares the fascinating story behind the inception of Asetek and his motivation for venturing into the world of sim-racing.

Fri 5 July: Content planning with our client Caitlin Wood today. Caitlin is the only woman to compete in this season’s Porsche Sprint Challenge Great Britain, but was unable to take part in the previous round at Oulton Park due to budget constraints. That means our work is more vital than ever and we remain determined to do all we can to open doors for Caitlin and get her back on track – where she deserves to be – by raising her profile via mainstream, digital, and social media. Plus an exciting call with EventR.
